A Place in Between
Sydney, 2025
A Place in Between, 2025 by Rafaela Mori is a contemporary approach to still-life paintings that portray native fruits from Australia (her current home) and Brazil (where she was born), intertwined with her own imagined fruits.
These invented elements serve as traces of the artist’s personality and emotions, embodying the intangible aspects of her identity that have evolved through cultural transition.
The work reflects Rafaela’s experience of living abroad and her ever-shifting relationship with the world and herself. While she finds home in this new country, a part of her remains nostalgic for her origins.
This duality places her in a unique space between past and present, embodying both places simultaneously. By merging the familiar with the imaginary, she creates a distinct visual language that speaks to the complexities of identity, belonging, and cultural assimilation.
